Welcome to the curriculum area of our school website. Our school ethos embraces the belief that all pupils have the right to learn in an environment that is safe, that stimulates, challenges, supports and encourages our young people to learn together, as well as be immersed in a curriculum that is creative, engaging and most importantly fun.
We provide an inclusive curriculum that is personalised to fully meet the needs of the pupils that attend the school. We recognise that many of our pupils need specialist approaches to their learning and development and this is encompassed in the personalised approach that we adopt for every pupil.
We provide a broad and balanced and relevant curriculum which meets the requirements of the EYFS, the National Curriculum with modifications to ensure accessibility for all pupils as well as a Post 16 curriculum that promotes independence, self-confidence and esteem and provides experience of the wider world in preparation for moving on. As a school we use the Read Write Inc reading scheme as our approach to Phonics, as well as Letters and Sounds and See and Learn to meet the differing needs of our pupils.
We focus on the development of the key skills of Communication, Cognition, Independence, Physical Development and Self-care; Skills that are transferable and equip children and young people for life beyond school.
A rolling programme is in place, which supports a balance of stimulating contexts for learning through different learning experiences, themes, theme days, learning in the community as well as discrete subjects.
At Arbour Vale School our curriculum is driven by the needs of the children and taught in phase groups. Class sizes are small with TAs allocated as appropriate, enabling pupils to receive significant individual attention.
