Birds of Prey intrigue pupils
Pupils and staff had the most amazing experience when Berkshire Birds of Prey visited for the day. It was a real hands-on experience with pupils being offered the chance to touch and, if they were feeling adventurous, even hold the birds.
Berkshire Birds of Prey, who run educational workshops, brought along 10 birds and a group of staff to look after the birds and encourage our pupils to learn about them. Most of the birds were owls including a Little Owl and a Barn Owl, but they also brought along two larger birds, a magnificent European Eagle Owl and a Harris Hawk.
We learnt about their different hunting techniques and prey. Some, but not all the birds prefer to hunt at night, swooping down on frogs and mice as a tasty meal. Angela from Berkshire Birds also spoke about the need to protect native birds.
Overall, it was a fascinating workshop which our pupils engaged with and really enjoyed. Angela and her team have much experience of working with young people with special needs and tailored the day to make it as inclusive as possible. For example, some of the PMLD students enjoyed feeling the birds’ feathers on their cheeks rather than touching with their hands. It was a truly unforgettable experience.
