Digging for Dinosaurs

Primary classes have been learning about dinosaurs in their STEM lessons this term. It has been an extremely popular topic and pupils have loved hearing about how these gigantic creatures roamed the Earth before humans. At the end of half term, all the hard work was rewarded with a special The Life Long Ago fossil dig school workshop which brought prehistoric life into school.

Pupils were able to locate and identify fossils from some of the most iconic dinosaurs of the past that were hidden in large sand boxes. Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops and a few other surprises were all thrown in. The workshop reinforced what pupils had learnt in class about when each dinosaur lived, where they came from, what they ate and much more.

Towards the end of the session, it got even more exciting when pupils came face to face with the incredibly realistic animatronic Parasauralophus and other young dinosaurs. The expert dinosaur handler introduced the realistic hatchlings to the pupils and explained about their family, diet, habitat and what the era was like millions of years ago.

Some pupils were a bit wary of the dinosaurs and rightly so, there was a baby T-Rex who was very snappy! But the majority were fascinated and treated the baby dinosaurs with a cautious interest.

It was a truly memorable way to bring this STEM topic to life and increase everyone’s understanding about their STEM topic on dinosaurs.
