Discovery Workshop
We were delighted to welcome the Three Discovery programme just before half term to run an ICT discovery (Free Digital Skills) workshop for pupils throughout the school. Pupils could choose to take part in three different workshops: Cartoon Making, Stop Motion Animation and Movie Making with Green Screen.
Pupils in the first workshop couldn’t wait to get their hands on the iPads to start the first workshop which was Cartoon Making using the Toontastic app. Jabez, a Discovery Training & Development Specialist at mobile phone company Three UK, quickly showed everyone the basics in the app, whilst eliciting the structure of a story from the pupils. Then pupils worked in pairs to choose a setting for their cartoon, pick their characters and record voice overs so they could create a story.
The next workshop used Lego to create Stop Motion Animations. Pupils again worked in small groups to build a Lego scene and take a picture of each step of the build process. The software then created an animation from the series of photos to create a mini (short) movie. This is the way that the popular Wallace and Gromit movies are made.
The final workshop of the day was Movie Making using Green Screens. Everyone had the chance to be filmed by a friend in front of the Green Screens talking about their favourite things. Computer games, cars and food were big favourites. They then found images on the internet of whatever they had been talking about and used the Green Screen setting in iMovie to superimpose these images to create a background behind their video as they explained why they liked it.
The results were amazing and everyone felt very excited by the cartoons and short films they had created. Pupils were able to choose which workshop they attended and it was particularly great to see pupils from Primary, Secondary and Post-16 working together. Everyone who took part really enjoyed this opportunity to develop digital skills and we hope to be able to host more of these workshops in the future.
Big thank you to Jabez and the Three Discovery team and if you would like to find out more about the programme please use the link below www.three.co.uk/discovery
