Industrial Cadets Bronze Award
Congratulations to Dover Class for achieving their Industrial Cadets Bronze Award. This is a nationally recognised award run the Engineering Development Trust (EDT). During the five-month project, the class had to come up with a new sustainable theme park for the UK that will last for generations to come!
The brief was to ‘Think about how to make the park as environmentally friendly as possible by considering the park’s accessibility, the materials required to build the park & rides, energy usage and resources required for its daily running.’
Dover Class came up with some fantastic ideas including Solar panels to provide power, a reservoir for water and a farm that would have the dual purpose of being a visitor attraction but also to provide food. They designed rides that were all accessible including a bungee jump, a big wheel and a train.
The class had to plan their project and carry out their research. Each member of the team was delegated their own element of the project, such as planning a ride or thinking about how the power supply. They were put into groups to learn Tinker CAD, a computer aided design package.
They then produced a report and poster, showcasing their designs and had to deliver a presentation to a group of industry experts on Teams. The experts asked questions after the presentation and gave feedback on what the class had come up with.
They started the project back in November last year and completed it in March. Over this time period the students developed a range of skills, including teamwork, communication, research, presentation and leadership. They also learnt new skills in computer assisted design.
Feedback from the industry experts was extremely positive. The final report said:
“The Team have done extremely well, they have understood the project brief fully,
They gave a solution to all areas of the park rather than just an overarching one, this shows initiative, adaptation and variety.
The presentation was well delivered and managed and again, everyone was involved, if there was a member in the shadows, they were bought into the spotlight by their peers. The poster was vibrant, displayed all areas that needed to be explained and looked fun! Their use of Tinker CAD was a great addition to this project and when asked what their favourite part of the project was, they all said Tinker CAD.
Overall, I believe this school and the mentor should be applauded on their thought processes, teamwork, time management, adaptation to overcome challenges and dedication to the understanding of the outcome. Well done Arbour Vale School!”
