Literacy inspiration from Harry Potter

We are incredibly grateful to the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry (BAAD for their generous donation towards our Harry Potter themed literacy drive this term. We were able to take a large contingent of pupils to Harry Potter World and held a special Harry Potter themed lunch and activity afternoon for all secondary students as a result of their gift.

The pupils who visited Harry Potter World loved their tour and were fascinated by the sets, costumes and the behind the scenes insight. They were particularly excited to come face to face with dementors who were demonstrating how their spooky effects were created. The actors involved were very understanding of the additional needs of some of our students for which we were very grateful.

The following week, the secondary dining hall was transformed into Hogwarts for a special Harry Potter themed afternoon. Members of staff dressed up and pupils had the chance to practice their magic and test their knowledge with a Harry Potter themed quiz.

After lunch there were a number of activities for everyone to take part in including Arbour Vale’s inclusive Quidditch challenge. Pupils also had the chance to decorate and personalise their very own wand and decorate sorting hat biscuits in the colour of their preferred Harry Potter house.

Finally there was a special potions class where pupils enjoyed making magical mixtures that sparkled and glowed in their glass bottles.

The afternoon activities were supported by Post-16 students who were on hand to help pupils at every station.

We are looking forward to seeing lots of magical, creative ideas being produced by our pupils who fully engaged with all the experiences.
