Personal Health & Social Education
PSHE is deeply embedded into the curriculum throughout Arbour Vale School and follows the three overarching themes of Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and The World Around Us. Topic areas provide pupils with knowledge and skills to stay safe and well; to be active in their life choices and to prepare them for the future. Through a range of learning activities which is inclusive of practical activities, we aim to promote and generate skills in areas of self-esteem, resilience, teamwork, problem solving and staying safe.
The main aim of PSHE is enhance the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils. The promotion of these experiences helps to ensure the general well-being of pupils at school and among the wider community. The teaching and learning of British Values is crucial in giving pupils the knowledge and understanding of democracy, law, individual liberty, mutual respect and the tolerance of those with other faiths and beliefs. The areas of study within the PSHE curriculum include economic well-being, making a positive contribution to school and the community, enjoying and achieving in school and in the community, keeping safe in a range of situations and scenarios, staying healthy and sex and relationship education. All work is suitably provided to meet the needs of each individual pupil taking into account their current age and stage of learning. Throughout all key stages, PSHE prepares pupils for a future away from AVS by drawing upon the pupils’ current experiences, the social experiences offered and the current legislations in place.
EYFS and Key Stage1
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, PSHE is about making connections and is strongly linked to play. PSHE is taught through activities that are part of topics, as well as on an individual basis to develop personal skills such as dressing, feeding and toileting.
Key Stage 2
During Key Stage 2 pupils use social and emotional approaches to learning to gain a broader understanding of health education, safety awareness and environmental issues. The teaching and learning of PSHE is not confined to a discrete lesson and aspects should be covered during the entirety of the school day.
Key Stage 3
During Key Stage 3 pupils undertake project work presented by ASDAN (New Horizons or Key Steps) which allows them to build a broader sense of self and to begin to identify more of where they fit into the world. Objectives and targets set at annual reviews and on IEPs are also included in these lessons and allows pupils a time to review and build upon targets.
Key Stage 4
In Key Stage 4 pupils continue to use annual review targets and IEPs to inform personalised learning. There is more focus on preparation for work through practical work experience and personal economy. The work undertaken is accredited by AQA.
At Post 16 the students are taught PSHE across the entire curriculum. Each student has an individual timetable and personalised learning of PSHE can be targeted specifically to meet the needs of individuals. There is a significant emphasis on independent living skills at this stage. Pupil learning in this area is accredited through ASDAN PSD, SRE and Towards Independence.
