Racing Cars for STEM Day

By Fiona Wilkins - May 24th, 2024 | Posted in Article

Secondary and Post 16 students have been taking part in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) project to design a racing car and see which one could travel the greatest distance.

They first had to decide on the means of propulsion for their car. Some used a ramp to launch their car whereas other groups used a balloon or an elastic band to power their vehicle. The students had to construct their car and ensure the wheels ran smoothly. Groups also went to great lengths to customise their designs and ensure they looked the part.

The cars were pitted against each other, and the distance travelled by each car was recorded. A trophy was awarded to the cars that travelled the furthest in Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. Some of the cars managed to travel the length of the school sports hall!

Well done – everyone should be very proud of their achievements!
