Supporting Families with Dysphagia Workshop

Arbour Vale School recently welcomed parents to an informative and supportive Dysphagia Workshop, delivered by specialist therapists Chelsea Ridge and Lucy Luff.

The session gave parents the opportunity to better understand dysphagia (eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties) and, importantly, how to support their children safely at home.

The workshop covered:

  • What dysphagia is and how it affects children
  • Key signs to look out for, including coughing, choking, or distress during meals
  • Practical strategies to support safer eating and drinking
  • Guidance on positioning, equipment and food textures
  • When to seek further support

Parents were encouraged to ask questions throughout, creating an open and supportive space to share experiences and build confidence.

The session also highlighted just how complex swallowing is, involving multiple muscles and stages, and why the right support can make such a difference to a child’s safety and wellbeing.

Feedback from those who attended was overwhelmingly positive, with parents valuing both the information and the opportunity to speak directly with specialists. Workshops like this are a key part of how the school works in partnership with families — not just educating, but giving parents the tools and confidence to support their children day-to-day.
